It amazes me at times that people will balk at my prices. I (understand that times are tight and starting a new enterprise can be a risk, but those who really understand business will not jump into the hype of instant web site equals instant success.
It is rare that any business has instant success. The same is true with instant web sites. Every business whether online, brick and mortar or a combination of both need to have a solid plan in place if they are going to be successful.
Let me give you an example of an instant web site night mare. A person of whom I was acquainted went to a seminar that offered an instant web site with a merchant account and the ability to accept credit cards. All they had to do was plop down a certain fee add their products and tell everyone about their great web store.
After paying for many add-ons to help get them more attention including SEO and advertising, this person had to sell his home, move his family and file for bankruptcy. He could have avoided this entire debacle if he had contacted me first and I would have given him so free advice even if he didn’t choose me as his web designer. However, his biggest mistake was not doing some planning.
First, he signed up with a company that promoted a turnkey business opportunity without checking them out before signing on the dotted line. He could have easily going to www.ripoffreport.com or www.BBB.org and a plethora of other consumer complaint web sites out there. Likewise he failed to preplan before shelling out one red cent to anyone.
He had a dream of owning his own business, quitting his day job, paying off his debt, and saving for the future. Theses are admirable goals, yet without a plan, they are simply a dream.
First and foremost, your web site like any business needs to have a business plan.
What are your costs or running building it, maintaining it, filling orders and the like?
You should have a monthly advertising budget and know your Return on investment (ROI)
The Small Business Administration can help you write a business plan www.sba.gov however, a good web designer can help you create a web site that has all the functions you want and need in order to follow through on your plan. If the designer does not have any SEO experience, (which they should), then they ought to be able to refer you to a reputable person or company that can help you.
Remember this saying. Failure to plan is planning to fail.

I have had several people ask me this question via twitter. Let me say that is is a greatquestion. Lots oe people already understand that it is important to recycle, ruse and conserve our resources. This not only improves where we live, but it can also improve your bottom line.
But How can a web site be green?
First, it saves potential customers the cost of fuel from coming to a store to check out your products. If you have a majority of your products online, they can see them before coming in and deciding they don't like what you have to offer. Not only that, you can sell them onlin and have them picked up at your store. No time or energy wasted traveling from store to store looking for just the right item.
Next, who is building or designing your web site? Is the person who builds your web site green? Do they use green energy or promote conservation? Even the very smallest attempts at these things can help make your web site greener. Our goal is to fully utilize solar power to run our computers. This will not only save us energy, it will reduce our expenses over time. The backup batteries stored from the solar panels on sunny days will help us get through the immensely cloudy and rainy ones.
Finally, Where is your web site hosted? Some web hosting companies offer completely green web hosting. They use wind energy to power their servers so they produce their own energy without the need of conventional energy. I'll try to post some of those comapnies in another post.
In the mean time, using all or even some of these methods will help make your web site greener.

If I have a dollar for every client I have heard the following statement :I would like a new web site and I need it ASAP." I could retire very soon.
I know when you have a brilliant idea or you want to expand a current business, the goal is to hurry up and get the new web site up and running so you can start getting a Return on your Investment (ROI).
There are a lot of things to get ready for if you are going to have a web site. Here are a list of things that I will provide for you to make sure that you are ready and that whomever is going to build your web site will be able to get it operational for you in a quick amount of time.
I am listing the things for an e-commerce web site, but with the exception of the shopping cart and ssl certificate a majority of these steps will apply to you.
- Domain Name Registration. Make it a good one.
- Web Hosting. Make certain they are reliable
- SSL Certificate, ensures your web site will secure
- Merchant Account to accept credit card payments
- Shopping cart functions, whatever it is you want your cart to do.
- Product information, image, weight, price, name description, options, shipping options, sales tax rate
- How many products?
- Color scheme and layout. Should be consistent throughout the site
- Web site functions, forms, polls, gallery, blog ect.
- Images and information you want on your pages like the about us, home page, contact us and so on
The person designing your web site and or shopping cart will need your username and password for your web hosting account and information about your merchant account.
Once you have all this information ready, you will be on the road to having your web designer get started.
A good web designer should be able to help you with domain name registration, getting an SSL certificate and even help find you a good web hosting company or host it for you.
I know that on your end it seems like a lot of work, but a great business takes a lot of work to start and it takes a lot of work to become a success.
Success comes by having a plan. Are you ready?

So here I am writing after a long furlough. I know before you post too much hate, I have been extremely busy on several projects since the Christmas Holiday season and am committed to keeping updates a bit more often.
I wanted to take a moment to mention a great company that I have found. I do not usually mention specific software developers, but after using their product on several projects, I wanted to say that I am absolutely impressed.

Experienced retailers from big box stores to mom and pop shops will tell you that every so often you have to move things around and add new products in order to keep sales growing.
You web site is not much different than a retail store. You must change things around and add new content in order to succeed at sales and to determine how to best market certain products.
Sales and specials are a great way to do this on you home page to entice buyers to go into your site and check out all the great products or services you have to offer.
You only have about 3 seconds to grab the attention of a potential customer, so make you offer clear, concise and enticing if you want to grab that sale.
The net results should increase your overall sales, but in addition to adding new and relevant content to your site, you will increase your chances of of higher search engine rankings.
While it is important to use paid advertising, natural search engine rankings must be sued as well. The higher you rank on key words relevant to your site, the more visitors you will get and the more potential sales.
You must remember however, that you should not overuse keyword also called keyword stuffing when you create your new content. Create product and services information pages, add testimonials and it will help your overall search rankings and provide additional reason for your potential customers to stay on your site longer.
Be careful however, try to keep your articles between 250-400 words to keep them otherwise, it will be information overload and you will loose them.
The best rule of thumb about adding new content is at the very least once a month, weekly or daily is even better, but do add new content and change things around a bit every so often, improve your marketing plan and reap the benefits.
